7o De copia, which is in good and readable Latin, is about methods of varying the form of expression, being 'copious' in fact. ' It teaches the use of all the verbal muscles in order to avoid any hint of flabbiness. The book's aim was to license and encourage not only the invention which aided coherence of argument, but copiousness, enlargement, amplitude of mind and phrase. Behind Seebohm's chapters is the unexpressed ideal of how it would have been ifTyndale (whom Seebohm mentions only in passing and not as a translator) had not armed an extreme popular front in England with a polemic New Testament, and if the searing and destructive dogmatics of such foreigners as Luther had not invaded our shores. 49 As an account of the New Testament it will not do. As an account of Colet it will not do, either. Certainly Colet lectured-in Latin, let us not forget-on Paul's Epistles, an unusual thing for a young man to do; and certainly he used the grammatical methods of the Italian humanists and the early Patristic writers instead of the dialectical methods of the Scholastics;511 and certainly Erasmus, brought to England by the young nobleman he was tutoring for cash, William, Lord Mountjoy, went to Oxford to meet Colet and there heard some of a winter's lectures.

The Utopians fall upon the Greek language and the art of printing and are wholly satisfied, needing nothing else. The denial of a strong native tradition in the early sixteenth century is a myth that needs to be challenged. Eyes dazzled by Italian sunshine, itself flooding ancient Greece and Rome, have not only failed to look at the English poetry and prose, but often denied it any critical worth. True, few now read Barclay and Hawes-perhaps that is why they are always officially mentioned; the Scottish poets Gavin Douglas and William Dunbar are beyond the border; the native chivalric tradition represented by Lord Berners is difficult to find in print.
