He was slouching in his chair, his legs out before him. He looked sleek and trim in his tailored brown suit. He was playing with his pen. He was talking. Then he stopped talking. He looked up. He smiled at me. He smiled thinly. “Johnny. Hey. Johnny,” he said softly. ” He waved a hand at the chairs. All the chairs were taken. “S’all right,” I said. ” He nodded. “Great,” he said, still softly. His voice was dangerously soft. ” I moved to the back of the room. I excused myself as I pushed past the others in their chairs.

Then he stopped talking. He looked up. He smiled at me. He smiled thinly. “Johnny. Hey. Johnny,” he said softly. ” He waved a hand at the chairs. All the chairs were taken. “S’all right,” I said. ” He nodded. “Great,” he said, still softly. His voice was dangerously soft. ” I moved to the back of the room. I excused myself as I pushed past the others in their chairs. Many of the editors studied the yellow legal pads in front of them as I went by. Many of my fellow reporters cleared their throats and murmured and stared at their laps.

I’ll be damned. What happened? ” He pointed at himself with the fingers of both hands. “Let’s just say I found it, uh, expedient, you know, to come to you. Okay? ” “Yeah. ” I slid the pictures back into the envelope. I tossed the envelope onto the carpet. I picked up my beer, pulled my cigarette free. I sat back in the director’s chair and looked at my youthful friend. His head kept bobbing happily. He let out his laugh in a stuttered hiss: chh chh chh. The smoke from my cigarette drifted lazily toward the open window.
