Regions may be intellectual constructs, but they are not abstractions: they exist in the real world, and they occupy space on the Earth’s surface. Boundaries It follows that regions have boundaries. Occasionally, nature itself draws sharp dividing lines, for example, along the crest of a mountain range or the margin of a forest. More often, regional boundaries are not self-evident, and we must determine them using criteria that we establish for that purpose.
